The raps and scats are punctuated by enough beauties as to make their revelation worth the wait, almost better for the relief. On Swordfish I'd cite: 'Johnsburg, Illinois, 'A Soldier's Things' and 'In the Neighbourhood' and the sweet instrumental that closes the album, 'Rainbirds'.Hissyfithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06865300919319235353noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2703706690625306888.post-58325413540118886042013-05-14T07:04:19.743+01:002013-05-14T07:04:19.743+01:00You are forgiven. A few omissions: On The Nickel, Shiver Me Timbers, Foreign Affair & San Diego Serenade would make it perect. I've always had to cherry-pick my way through Tom's albums, especially everything after Heartattack & Vine. So many of his ballads are absolutely stunning, but I just don't have the tolerance or the patience for all the dissonant stuff. I really don't know what to make of old Tom, and I'm not sure that he does either. I do like this story he tells...

“My kids are starting to notice I'm a little different from the other dads. "Why don't you have a straight job like everyone else?" they asked me the other day.
I told them this story:

In the forest, there was a crooked tree and a straight tree. Every day, the straight tree would say to the crooked tree, "Look at me...I'm tall, and I'm straight, and I'm handsome. Look at you...you're all crooked and bent over. No one wants to look at you." And they grew up in that forest together. And then one day the loggers came, and they saw the crooked tree and the straight tree, and they said, "Just cut the straight trees and leave the rest." So the loggers turned all the straight trees into lumber and toothpicks and paper. And the crooked tree is still there, growing stronger and stranger every day.” (Tom Waits)
Tim Patrickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01089890504560756715noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2703706690625306888.post-11155758796388929502013-05-13T22:41:13.503+01:002013-05-13T22:41:13.503+01:00Good call re Christmas Card btw Brendan... oft ove...Good call re Christmas Card btw Brendan... oft overlooked.Hissyfithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06865300919319235353noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2703706690625306888.post-84433547799601770592013-05-13T22:39:39.188+01:002013-05-13T22:39:39.188+01:00I wonder if he could reduce 'Bohemian Rhapsody...I wonder if he could reduce 'Bohemian Rhapsody' to a 3 minute special?
Thanks, but not for me Brendan. I was even mounting a defense for 'Alice' which is heartstopping... One From the Heart would have broken the 'no soundtracks' rule that I've already broken with Once Upon a Time. I'm surely hell bound... 'Everything's going to Hell'! Tom's just told me so. I'm on 'Blood Money' now. There's relief, although after finishing the other half of the bottle last night I have to agree that 'All the World's Green'. Might even take out my old vinyl copy.
Been doing a lot of similar dithering on my No 6 too. I'll choose soon.
