Sad news that Levon Helm is in the terminal stages of throat cancer.
You can read more here.
The drummer with 'The Band', and latterly a solo performer and successful character actor, has been struggling with the condition for some time.
Talk about 'spunky'; here's a recent performance on Elvis Costello's 'Spectacles' show (with a pretty impressive supergroup); he couldn't be interviewed because he had "a sore throat", but let his drums do the talking.
He seems to be having the time of his life...
Been watching and listening to this piece of film of The Band in rehearsal. What a band, and what a singer Helm was.

It's an excellent clip Seamus; great sound quality and what a song!
ReplyDeleteLevon's drumming is so subtle; I love his high hat shuffle... the real star of this though is Garth Hudson's hammond organ.
Your link leads on to some brilliant clips; they were a great live band and sounded like no-one else before or since; organic, quirky and timeless, classic yet contemporary...
