Lovesong: Paul Buchanan: Buy a Motor Car

Take a listen to this.
Makes you think what Mid Air might have sounded like as a Blue Nile album.
It's the Elegance Remix (by Robert Bell of The Blue Nile) of Buy A Motor Car by Paul Buchanan.

Buy A Motor Car is the new single to be taken from 'Mid Air'.
The song, according to Paul, is about “... escaping or urging someone to escape a claustrophobic relationship, as far as I can tell.."

  1. thanks for this Trev that is an interesting listen.... although Mid Air up their with the last 2 Talk Talk lps has got to be one of the most "un single friendly" lps going!

    1. Agreed, although I find myself singing most tracks at various points of the day, esp' the title track and 'The Cars Are in the Garden'...

  2. Having had the cd since its release, I cannot help thinking there is something missing from Mid Air, maybe I just wanted another Blue Nile album I don't know, all the same this seems like an unlikely choice of single to me, Two Children may have been a better release, either way I think your right in that it really is an album with little in the way of chart material to be fair but I'm glad I bought it, I just don't want to wait another 8 years for his next release.......!

    1. I can't stop playing it; love the minimalism.
Seems to be polarising opinion: either getting under the skin or on the t*ts.

  3. I really love this version and wish the whole album could be remixed along these lines.I like mid air but it feels a bit like a demo, somehow unfinished.

    1. Pencil sketches that reveal too much?
Not enough paint on the canvas?
I'm already adding orchestrations in my head.
I wonder if this was Paul's intent.
Art as a connection; the receiver/perceiver a vital part of the process...

    2. That's just it ,Trev. Not enough paint on the canvas. The tracks need some light and shade and I think the remix does a fantastic job in making the track more 'interesting'.I can see Tims point of 'mosquito mix' but I think it sounds like The Blue Nile in the 21st Century.
Talking of which ,have you heard the debut album by Clock Opera? Is this the music The Blue Nile would be making if they were born 30 years later?

It's only single malt round my house Trev!

  4. Hmm, I hate to be contrary Phil, but it sounds like the "pesky mosquitos remix" to me...
Live version is mesmerizing though... as always.
I'm still not completely sold on the album, yearning for another chorus, middle-eight or dazzling guitar solo (kidding). Not exactly sizzling summertime fare, but I can see cozying up during a bleak mid-winter's night or a dark night of the soul...

  5. Dark night of the soul?
I'm definitely going to Phil's party over yours Tim...
Unless, of course, we're drinking single malt...

  6. A wee bit heavy there, eh? For me it's compact but weighty mood music... mournful but healing. I guess I take music too seriously?
OK back to your party boys. Buzz... Buzz...
    Cheers!

    1. I'm with you actually Tim; mournful works for me every time.
      I love sad songs...

  7. I still really love it and haven't tired of it at all
I love the fact the lp is a mood piece as anything else would have been a .... Well probably a bit like the blue Nile only with something missing
It is a solo lp and while I do like the remix it does feel a tad Nile light!

  8. Agree that there needed to be a strong flavour (albeit with limited ingredients) to take it away from the sumptuous sounds of The Blue Nile. A brave step that should be applauded...
This is no cocktail; just quality single malt...

  9. Hey PHIL! If you're out there, Thanks for the direct to "Clock Opera". While I don't quite get the Blue Nile connect, sounding more (to me) like Elbow, M83, Snow Patrol, Metronomy territory. The 3 videos for the singles are extremely well made. I was so distracted by the videos that I had to turn off the monitor to listen to the music, which is really interesting. Shalom Phil...

For others, maybe have a peak...
