Lovesong: Alabama Shakes: Hold On

I saw this on 'Later with Jools' and fell for the band.
I love:
the whiff of youth club presentation
the energy of the risings and the fallings...
the bass player's contented beam...
the guitarist's nervous riffing...
the piano player's simple jabbings...
the drummer's tea cosy and pushes... and
the singer's Joplinesque chutzpah...
"Bless my heart, bless my soul
Didn't think I'd make it
To 22 years old..."
I remember that...

  1. Funny you should mention the Shakes as I am a huge fan after reading something Guardian-esque a few months ago when they'd gone viral (in the modern sense) having been 'discovered' doing gigs in the back rooms of sports bars in Alabama. A bit like The Magic Numbers - not much to look at but the sound coming from Brittany (loving the Franco spelling) is gorgeously raw. Unsure if it's fusing soul, country, punk, folk or even a bit of Chuck Berry on Heavy Chevy, but it's working. And let's hope they don't suffer rookie syndrome and rush out a second album before this one's well settled ...
